Virtual Learning: Rejection Doesn't Define Your Writing, Language Does.

IMAGERY

What is imagery in storytelling or poetry? It is a word picture a writer creates.

We want imagery to be organic; that is, it must engage all the reader’s senses so they are transported into another world, however transient that elopement is. I know of several types of imagery. Am I right or wrong?)

Visual - the poem makes you see a mental picture

Tactile - the poem makes you feel/experience an emotion

Gustatory -the poem makes you imagine tasting or drinking something

Auditory - the poem uses words to make you hear a sound, or a noise

Olfactory - the poem makes you smell something. Nah. Stop it. I meant a nice smell.

Kinaesthetic - the poem evokes the sense of movement: nothing vulgar LOL, just running, dancing, falling.

I've shared some slides below from a virtual writing workshop I attended last Sunday. It was run by a writer who teaches MA creative writing students in America.

TIP: Use an image in your writing to make it less abstract.

1.      Ekundayo’s heart was heavy. X

2.      Ekundayo ‘s chest felt like six buffalos were crushing it in.

In example two, the reader connects two disassociated elements (chest + buffalos) and conjures up a mental picture of them sitting on the protagonist’s chest.

We want your image-rich, voice-driven stories and poems.
