Greetings, fellow poets! I am Janine, an aspiring poet from the tip of Africa, surrounded by balmy ocean. I am a graduate in theory of literature and creative writing and a published short story writer and poet. I was lucky enough to be nominated for a Pushcart Prize last year.

It is a great honour for me to share this space with you as we explore the craft behind the magic of poetry. Like a message in a bottle sent from someone on a deserted island, you can open poetry if you come to it with humility and a willingness to be moved. And the real magic is that in turn, a poem can also open you, with the feeling that you are not alone in this world. That other hearts have ached, burned, and beaten heavy with want just like yours.

As Percy Bysshe Shelley says: Writing, real writing, should leave a small sweet bruise somewhere on the writer . . . and on the reader.

Join me over the next couple of months while we explore what makes a poem magic and how we can use these techniques to compress the coal of our thoughts into diamonds. Let's work together and do what poet Bruce Smith says, and “Write like a lover. Write like you’re leaving yourself for another.”
