Question:What Were You Looking for as the Gatekeeper?

"Well, my job was different from the judge’s one. I gave them a benchmark poem for the competition, which was the 2024, poem: Arrival by Adedayo Agarau. (A benchmark poem simply sets an expected standard for the region.)

I concerned myself with the first (hook line) and last lines of the poems. Both the introductory and end lines have to be unforgettable.

I printed out, read and re-read some of / the shortlisted pieces several times to determine whether or not pacing, clarity and tone fitted perfectly in the body of the work.

If a poem started off with brief lines as if the poet were jogging or running, then suddenly settled or dwelled on an idea, I would query why the pace changed. Readers do not like a major shift in a poem- well I don’t. (A poem can raise the stakes too as in the end part of Arrival but guide me along please as Adedayo did.)

If the poem’s tone altered, I would wonder why. Similarly, so clarity means good use of English- choosing the right word/s.  Good writers use a thesaurus.

Some poets tend to overwrite. Because the stipulated guidelines were 40 lines, it doesn’t mean you have to keep going just to elongate your poem when nothing much more could be added. I’ve seen short poems do well in competitions in the UK too.

I asked myself too, Is the poem dated? Have I read a better one elsewhere? Does it reflect current styles found in Literary magazines in 2025?

Lastly, I checked for grammatical errors. A poem with grammatical errors cannot win."

B. James.

Email Queries

Please Email Editor at pennedinrage@outlook.com using form below.

Ladies and gentlemen, after seven long gruelling weeks I’ve completed the draft manuscript of the anthology. Its title is Water, Rain & Floods. It features ninety-six poems, down from a hundred and ten. *Poem number doesn't correspond to page number in manuscript.

1. Query- Where will book/s be published?

Zambia and Amazon KDP. Sent via DHL to Nigeira

2. Query- I cannot find my poem on the Contents Page but I signed a publishing contract.

I read the manuscript up to a dozen times. With each read, editors’ strike out’ material that does not fit in with the overall anthology. As much as I tried to represent newer voices, I found myself rewriting weak poems and thereby mispresenting poets. Later, I deleted all those poems which contained up to 50%  rewritten lines.

3. Query- I don’t like the layout of my poem?

I understand and completely appreciate your contribution to the aesthetics of the book, however that’s mine and the publisher’s job. I set out to pay homage to the work of eminent Nigerian-born poets: Adedayo Agarau, Inua Ellams and Theresa Lola. Most altered poems were redone to celebrate their style of writing.

 4. Query- My poem is now in Standard British English.

 Yes.

5. Query- You’ve rewritten some of my lines.

Yes. As per contract if a line contained significant grammatical errors then I had no choice but to correct them. It was done in your best interest.

6. Query- I really don’t like the changes, what’s the way forward?

Please use the drop-down menu on the designated Anthology Queries form below to submit your version.

I won’t rewrite the manuscript but promise to delete your poem. Please check back by June 5th to see reflected changes.

As a gesture of good will, I’ll publish your preferred version online in August 2025, when the next edition of Penned in Rage Journal goes live.

7. Query- You only have, ‘Mrs Miggins/Joe Blogs is a Nigerian poet’ as my author’s bio.

Those writers haven’t reverted back with a biography. Please send in a 50-word bio and signed contract against 5th of June. Thank you.
